Is Low Resolution the New Trend? Why Everyone Is Falling in Love with Lo-Fi Retro Style Again

Is Low-Res the New Cool? Why Everyone’s Falling for the Lo-Fi Retro Look Again

Have you noticed that the blurrier photos get, the more they seem to capture a feeling?

The cameras on the latest iPhones keep getting better, capturing every pore in crystal-clear detail. Yet people are digging out decade-old phones and CCD digital cameras, or deliberately adding grain and blur filters to their photos.

A little blurry, a little yellow, sometimes even overexposed. But somehow, they just look so good!

From Lana Del Rey to Tyla, Old Phones Are Back

Remember when Lana Del Rey used to take mirror selfies with her rhinestone-encrusted BlackBerry?

The photos weren’t nearly as crisp as they are today, but they had a soft, almost dreamlike quality.

Recently, singer Tyla shared that she still uses a BlackBerry and an iPhone 5C to take photos. The reason is simple: older lenses come with a soft-focus effect, making even her makeup look more natural!

Compared with today’s high-resolution cameras that capture every detail in sharp focus, these imperfect photos have a charm all their own.

Why Is Everyone Getting into Lo-Fi?

Lo-Fi is short for “low fidelity.” Today, it’s also commonly used to describe a visual style with grainy textures, blurry colors, and a retro vibe.

From film cameras to CCDs to old iPhones, people seem to be falling more and more in love with images that haven’t been polished to perfection.

Photos can be a little shaky, a little out of focus, or even have an odd color cast. These little details, once seen as flaws, have become what gives images their retro feel.

After all, sometimes a photo has to be a little blurry to capture the moment as it truly felt.

It’s Not Just Photos—We Want Life to Slow Down, Too

This wave of nostalgia isn’t limited to photography.

Vinyl records, iPods, cassette tapes, and even handwritten letters are gradually finding favor with young people again.

We used to want one phone that could do everything. But now, it seems we’re starting to miss the little everyday rituals that take a bit more time.

Taking a photo with a camera and transferring it to your computer once you get home; choosing a favorite record and listening to it from start to finish; or writing a letter and looking forward to a reply.

They may be a little more hassle, but they have a romance all their own.

Imperfection Is What Makes It So Lovely

Maybe what makes Lo-Fi truly appealing isn’t just its retro look, but the way it lets us stop expecting every image to be perfect.

Photos don’t have to be high-res, and life doesn’t have to happen in real time. There’s nothing wrong with slowing down a little and letting things be a little blurry.

Next time you take a photo, try doing a little less editing and leaving in a little more grain.

After all, some memories are extra adorable when they’re a little blurry!
